Last week, Delta announced that they would be bringing back free meals in economy on their premium transcontinental routes between Los Angeles/San Francisco and New York. However, Delta announced today that this awesome new service is being expanded to 10 more routes beginning April 24, 2017. The routes are as follows (though it is kind of funny that none of the routes that will feature free meals begin or end in Atlanta, Delta’s mega hub):
Washington, DC (Reagan National)–Los Angeles
New York (JFK)–San Diego (my home town!)
New York (JFK)–Portland
New York (JFK)–Seattle
Wow… just wow.
It is great to see US airlines investing in their onboard products again. As far as I’m concerned, economy class flying is as good as it’s been this entire century: with airlines’ profits rising, the big 3 US carriers are now improving their onboard products so much that, for the first time in a very long while, the US airline industry isn’t the butt of jokes everywhere (though I’m sure it still might be if US Airways still existed… #rekt).
Delta offers more details on just what will be on offer in the following press release:
Delta’s new meal program will feature a variety of options for customers depending on the time of day of their flight. In the morning, customers will have the option to choose between a Honey Maple Breakfast Sandwich, Luvo Breakfast Medley or fruit and cheese plate. During the day, customers will be able to select from a Mesquite-Smoked Turkey Combo, Luvo Mediterranean Whole Grain Veggie Wrap, or fruit and cheese plate. For overnight flights, customers will be offered a breakfast bar during the pre-arrival beverage service.
With the big three US airlines being the copycats that they are, I really hope that American and United might follow Delta’s example, even on a limited scale.
On the whole, this move is simply awesome. Delta is, I believe, quickly establishing itself as the most ‘premium’ of the three major airlines when it comes to the passenger experience, offering free inflight entertainment throughout its mainline fleet, stylish cabins and lounges, and and now free meals on select flights. Well done Delta!
